I am 25 years old and living in the Bay Area, California. I would love to move to Israel and either find a place to rent or live on a kibbutz. The two areas I would be most interested in living in are Tel Aviv or Tiberias. Has anyone done this? Any advice? Any tips you might have would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi! I am 25 years old and moving to Israel next month so I have the ability to defintely help you - if i leave anything out you can email me if you want.
My advice is to contact your local shaliach to get the process started (if you decide to go live in Israel you should just make an Aliyah - you’re under no obligation to stay there if you hate it and if you move by doing an aliyah the government really helps you out)
you’ll fill out an application and the shaliach will tell you what type of aliyah you’re eligable for. the paperwork is a big pain and a bunch of pointless beaucractic questions ( i had to photocopy each single passport ive ever had AND MY parents) after you fill everything out 3 weeks (so they say, mine took 6) they’ll tell you if you’re approved.
Once you are approved you can get ready to go. if you’ve a lot of stuff and decide to send a lift you’ve to find a company on your own (nnefesh b'nefesh website is VERY helpful if you want to make an aliyah — check them out)
the governemnt will pay your one way ticket and when you get to the airport they give you some money to begin you off (see: SOME money) then every month you will get money from the for a year.. just enough to pay your cable bill lol..
you can enroll in ulpan if you do not talk hebrew (and some kibbutzim host olim for ulpan and just to have a family) my aunt lives on a kibbutz and has taken in a 23 year old guy before he goes to the army.
if you decide you want to get a bachelor's/master's tehy will also pay your education.
rent SUCKS to find (i know this to be true in tel aviv) its hard to find a place to live and everything is smaller.. but you'll just look. they’ve palces for olim to stay temporarily like dorms so they can have some time before they really get settled and they aren't just thrown to the streets. i dont know about tiberias. id envision itd be easier because its away from the center.
im probably leaving something out but let me know if i canhelp with anything else

OK, here is my advice to you lady:
Don't do it.
Plain and simple.
It took me more than 20 years for me to realize that.
No, Israel isn’t a bed of roses.
If you decide to do so, get ready to miss all of those little things the West offers as easy living standards and be prepared to live 100 years back in time.
Plus the Israelis will get your bank account stash, so kiss your nest-egg goodbye too.
You just read the sign on the wall …backwards.
Shalom.

Hi!
So the best way to go about it is to contact the Israel Center (it's on Steuart St in SF). Or, if you're in the East Bay, you can go to the Federation (on Grand Ave). They both have “shaliah's” working there, and their primary job is to aid people like you! It's not a difficult process, but there's a lot of paperwork to fill out. Another great thing to do is to sign up for Nefesh B'Nefesh. They’ve extraordinary programs and information.
I went through the whole process of making aliyah about 5 years ago, even had the plane ticket (which they pay for, by the way), and had to cancel at the last minute because of a health issue. Now I'm married and anticipating a baby, but my husband (born there, raised here) knows that we're moving at our first opportunity!
BEST OF LUCK!!!!
EDIT: I should have read hagger's post….she clearly has it down pat! Good luck on your move, too!! ![]()

Just do it.
Take with you all of your family members too.
I think it's a great idea.
I know life in Israel is kinda like a Russian Roulette bet, but hey look at the bright side of this, you get a 5/1 chance in your favor.
Good luck!
