G’day, I want to learn more about your country . . . .! …
Out of your little ‘corner of the world’ what are the 5 BEST things about living there?
Also name 3 things you don’t like about it, or would want to change.
Thanks Mate
- where is Tunisia anyhow??
Answer:
Tunisia is in North Africa, towards the middle of the continent. Our neighbors are Algeria to the West, and Libya to the South-East. We are directly under Sardinia, Italy. Malta and Sicily are closes neighbors to our North-East.
The 5 best things about Tunisia in my opinion are:
1.) The health care. We have very knowledgeable doctors (98% further their education in France or the USA) and they have reasonable costs, even without insurance. A normal doctors appointment is between 15-30TDN. A trip to the ER is 10TDN. The government will pick up most of the cost -including medications- (if you apply for it) for long-term illnesses such as cancer, mental health diseases, and they will even do this for pregnancy (including labor and delivery).
2.) Safety. Tunisia is a very safe country. The government has gone through extensive lengths to accomplish this. There are not many places in this world where a women can walk the streets alone in the middle of the night without fear. Yet I often take late night walks (around 11pm or so when I can't sleep) and have never had any problems and have never felt fearful. There is a joke here too the between a police officer and a police officer, you find a police officer. We also let our children run around the marina or the cafés and don't worry about someone kidnapping them because that just doesn't happen here. It is a terrific place to raise a family - amongst safety, security, love, kindness, etc. Believe me, it's safe.
3.) The country is so full of history (has been under the rule of Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Berbers, Ottomans, Beys, and French; played a significant part in WWII, was the center of the ancient world with Carthage as the capitol, etc) and it has so many beautiful places to visit! It is unlike any other Arab country in that is has a lot of greenery. There are also many historical ruins in just about every part of the country you go to.
4.) Family is very important here - there are no homeless, although there are poor people. Everyone helps everyone else -neighbors bring food to each other, the poor can always count on someone giving them food and clothes, children are not expected to leave home as soon as they turn 18, etc. Every child MUST attend school or else their father gets in trouble with the law. You will not see cases of children being made to work to help support the family and letting their education fall to the wayside. Tunisia was also one of the first countries in the world to give women equality to men, and grant them the right to vote. It was one of the first Arab countries to allow women to seek a divorce from a man on her own accord, to work outside the home, and give them education on family planning.
5.) Everyday living her is jut so calm and peaceful. You don't feel like you are in a rush all the time. People here enjoy the simple things in life and truly appreciate everything. We have less stress in ou lives, and are happy.
3 Things I would change if I could:
1.) Wider streets and more parking. When they did the roads and parking, they weren't planing very far into the future in regards to how many people would own and drive cars. I would at least implement a plan for parking spaces when companies want to open a store, and I would like to see at least the major roads be widened.
2.) I would update the drainage system. As it is, if we get heavy rains, or if it rains a long time, some areas flood. I would like to improve this
3.) Punctuality. A lot of places open late and/or close early. I would really appreciate it if businesses would open and close on time. It would improve efficiency, and could generate more money, and improve customer satisfaction.
If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.
