I found out at the drs office that I’ve swimmers ear (possibly) and I am on antibiotics and steroids for flying tomorrow night (24 hours from now). I have started the 2nd dose as of now. I have the ability to pop the ear by swallowing w/o difficulty- is this the only problem I really face while descending in the plane? I guess my question is, if I have the ability to relieve the pressure, is that all that’s the large problem with being sick or having ear problems?

Answer:
Call your doctor and ask him if you can take something like Afrin which might help, I used it whenever I am sick. But do call the physician first.

Otherwise bring some candy or chewing gum, you need to move your jaw to release the pressure. You can also try popping your ears by closing them with the little flaps in front (whatever they’re called :-) and releasing.

Worse case scenario…it will hurt but you’ll live.

Answer:
It all depends on what kind of meds you're on. the safest thing to do is to contact your doctor and ask him or her if air travel is safe for you.
