My advice:
Whenever you go to any local spots (restaurants, etc.) in Thailand (of course these go go bars aren't actually local, but they are a huge part of nightlife nonetheless) always encounter as approachable, relaxed, and nice, even in high pressure situations (where an argument with a local might escalate into a fight, for instance). Believe it or not, this works very well. Your problems, if any, will be minimal if you behave this way throughout Thailand.
Now with the bargirls, be careful. If you go with any of them make sure they’re not shady - I comprehend this could be hard to decipher - generally though, women who encounter as being dishonest are easy to spot since Thais generally good at expressing themselves.
It is ideal to stay away from them altogether for some of the reasons already mentioned as well as the strong possibility of contracting a disease.
If you want to meet a nice Thai lady avoid the bar areas.
