If you had stated cricket then I would have stated Napier in Hawkes Bay, they’ve an international stadium there. The Kiwis are not really interested in Football, their sporting obsession is Rugby. It isn’t just a matter of life and death, it is more important than that for the Kiwis.
As for shopping and scenery, then Wellington is the place to go.
It has got a bit rough over the years, especially around Cuba Street but is as safe as houses as compared to south London and Manchester.
