What are typical breakfasts, lunches, snacks, dinners, beverages, etc. Do people eat out a lot- are there a lot of fast food places and restaurants? When people cook at home, do they usually make easy boxed/canned/frozen meals, or homemade? I know this will vary from home to home, but if you could just give me a national generalization, I'd really appreciate it!

I have travelled the world and there’s no other place I know of that has such an abundaance of fresh food. The Fish is wonderful. as New Zealand has a lot of rivers running off Mountains into the sea and this makes excellent fishing grounds also no Country next to it so they are very lucky. And there’s a lot of Countryside so many farms. With New Zealands high rain fall the fruit and Vegetables grow really well. Many New Zealanders make their own jam and preserves but that is probably dying out a bit now with Peoples life styles being busier. The New Zealanders are mostly excellent cooks with a variety of foods but if you are a person that has no time for cooking then there is the fast food outlets and supermarkets have a great range of takeaway meals and snacks. There are many restaraunts and coffee bars. The New Zealanders love a coffee and cake while out shopping . As for beverages. Name it and you should be able to find it. The book shops have an abundance of new Zealand Cook books and they are really great. I’ve a couple maybe 3or 4 in my cupboard and often cook from them. Breakfast varies many have cereal Mueseli is popular some have a cooked breakfast but most dont have time for that but make a point of cooking breakfast Bacon eggs mushrooms tomatoes on a Sunday. Some may just have toast on the run. Lunches often sandwiches with beautiful fillings of salads maybe salmon or ham or vegemite and lettuce or a bannana sandwich . Dinners vary a lot as well there are many nationalities so some might have Asian stir fry and rice or 2 or 3 vegetables and a meat or a vegetarian meal. . Fish and chips occassionally Citrus trees grow well there and quite a few people will have a lemon or orange or Mandarin or Grapefruit tree in the garden and when they’ve plenty on the tree often they share with neighbours. So you have a real mixture but generally I would state they cook at home. most nights.

LOL one word: BLAND!!!!!!

While NZ has an abundance of great seafood, quality farmed produce and game sadly it's not exploited at all by most of the locals. Auckland has the highest amount of junk food outlets per capita in the entire world, and while there's some decent Indian and Thai (etc…) places about most of it's crud like McDonalds and Burger King. The Kiwis of former decades had a strong ethic of homemaking and cooking and NZ had some great domestic recipes (e.g. Colonial Goose). But sadly the over indulged baby-boomer generation put a stop to that and now most kiwis think of 'cooking' as heating up some premade tomato sauce with pasta. Kiwis can't cook from scratch and the country has sadly adopted an attitude of low confidence which makes most people too narrow-minded to broaden their culinary horizons easily.

Too sum it up most of it now's a bland and often poor-quality imitation of British and American food. Some of the perfected fare is fish & chips and meat pies, what does that indicate?

To be fair though the more current immigrant from the orient are a bit more food-conscious.

There's a saying that Australia rode on the sheeps back …a reference to the wealth created out of the wool industry ….well New Zealand literally grows off the sheep !
