Halifax or dartmouth?

Author: admin

I grew up in Dartmouth, lived there for 25 years.

Have worked in Halifax for 12 years.

Dartmouth and Halifax are on opposite shores of the same harbour, though it's called Halifax Harbour. The ferry that traverses it was known for years as the Dartmouth ferry, and was the only means of crossing the harbour for many years until the 2 bridges were constructed.

Dartmouth had a quieter pace of life, was known for its lakes, etc. Now it has grown so much it has very similar traffic problems to Halifax. It has less of a downtown nightlife, though, still and fewer apartment buildings. Even though rent might be cheaper, transportation is more of an issue. Buses take a long time to get from some parts of Dartmouth to Halifax. Travelling by car is frustrating. There is an express bus but all the express bus services are very busy and need expanding. The ferry is okay if you live within easy walking or bus distance, depending on where you want to get to.

If you are a student going to a downtown university, most try to find accommodation in downtown or southend Halifax, (Rockingham if going to the Mount). Halifax is the business hub as well, many people end up working in Halifax for business or government, so getting here always involves traffic. IF you want the busiest pace in the province choose Halifax. If you are looking for a little more value for your dollar and don't mind the trade-off of a longer commute, choose HAlifax.

My husband had to come to Dartmouth from Halifax to find me - and we've been happily married for 16 years, so there are some good things to be found in Dartmouth despite what Halifax folks may say to the contrary.

And if you want true peace and quiet - try Fall River!

Answer:
Halifax for sure.

Rents are cheaper in Dartmouth….. but, you'd be in Dartmouth.

Unless you are from Halifax, you probably wouldn't get it.

I had a roommate who summed it up for me. He was Russian and very interested in getting girls' phone numbers. He met a bunch of cute girls at a downtown Halifax cafe. I asked him if he got their numbers. He said, "Nyet! What I am going to say to girl from Dartmouth? I know nothing about truck!"
