I am taking a train in a few months to Vancouver B.C. With my girlfriend because she wants to see her best friend from about 5 years ago. We aren't sure about the regulations though regarding border crossing by train.

What I want to know is this!

1. Will we need a passport? Or will a birth certificate with valid photo i.d. count as well?

2. We are leaving in december and mayber coming back after the new year, will any new restrictions come into effect after the new year that will hinder our return into the states?

thanks for your help!!!!!

Answer:
Entering Canada you do not need a passport, but to return to the US you do, , it is the U.S that has the restrictions not us, as for laws our punishment for crimes is the same as the U.S and laws the same to almost, just don’t bring anything illegal, and carrying a gun here is for the police, we don’t need to be armed all the time.

In Vancouver there’s a NO Smoking law for all public places, so you can not light up in a bars, restaurants, clubs, elevators, cabs or coffee shops, most people take it out side, now in a private residence they are the bosses. if you rent a car we drive on the same side of the road as you, we do have running water and our electric appliances work on the standard 110 volt system like yours, Vancouver can be rainy or cool so pack for the same weather you’ve in Oregon.

I’m a former chef and worked in Vancouver B.C and travelled once to Portland and 2 times to Seattle so I am aware of the similarities.

Answer:
I'm pretty certain you need full passports now, with all the extra security after 9/11. Why not contact the proper authorities? - like Canada Customs etc.

Answer:
yes you’ll need a passport. there's still a lot of time so you might as well go and get passports now.
