Berlin is closest. Shortest driving distances from Hanover (one 'n' in German ) are…to Berlin 173 miles…to Frankfurt 197 miles…to Munich 356 miles. I lived in Hanover for a while…great place. It's quite a pleasant drive now to Berlin but in the days of East Germany the part of the route from Helmstedt on the border,to the Brandenburg gate in Berlin was called the Berlin Corridor (not to be confusd with the Berlin Air Corridor),and was controlled by the Soviet Army,who had military trucks cruising along it 24/7. All vehicles leaving Helmstedt were given a time to arrive at Brandenburg checkpoint. Arriving too early meant you got done for speeding and arriving too late meant you were driving too slowly and were therefore spying. Automobile break-downs were a nightmare,so only top-condition automobiles were used.
