I know that there are a great deal of Americans who assume that the rest of the world hates our “greedy a$$es,” but my question is for anyone who really knows. I've traveled internationally, but never been directly hated on for being American. I was just wondering if anyone has been or knows about anyone who has been openly discriminated against for being American in their travels abroad. Also, any reasoning. (I'm sick of reading other people's questions whining about how they want to fit in with a country's people so they won't get hated on for being American, when in most cases it isn't necessary.)
And this isn't like “Does anyone feel like the rest of the world is making fun of us?” Because, frankly, we deserve to be made fun of…hahaha…I'm just curious as to who's serious or where we're not really wanted/welcomed. Sorry if this question's confusing…
Answer:
Nearly all of the Americans I met so far were very kind. They were in general not arrogant. Always polite and respectful. I have to state, Americans have great sense of humour. Some of my ideal friends were American.
My problem starts with Americans when we start speaking about international politics and especially when those Americans start defending their government's decisions. When anybody says that he/she hates Americans, I don't think they mean you, Joe, Mike or Mary individually. What they hate is the system and understanding Americans have created and maybe your failure to recognise this monster.
I’ve few words for the “gentlemen” who answered you the first. American international politics and the financial system (capitalism) is the main reason people are hungry, suffering and dying throughout the world. First you destroy a country. Then, you provide aid for them. Off course, you only provide aid for them if you have something to benefit from them in the future. You don’t liberate people. You only want to create puppet governments around the world. You hide those puppet governments behind free elections and democracy. In fact, you influence those governments towards taking decisions parallel to US politics That’s why you use aid (bribe). If you can not do that, you change that government through blackmail, military coups and through other means. Your government will throw anybody in the fire or make your young soldiers kill any baby in any country if they have the ability to make their huge corporations earn money (by liberation).
Why is high education in US not free of charge? Why is it not a public service? If it wasn’t, you would not have any soldiers to invade other countries. Some young people enlist to collect money for high education. Why don’t they want you to have high education? Because they want to remain as a rich minority at the top of the pyramid. The rest can be enslaved by low education and low salaries, strugling to make ends meet. I bet you can all find jobs as a cashier in Wall-Mart or MC Donald’s.
Now you want the rest of the world to appreciate your civilian killing army and private security companies because they are fighting Al-Qaida and Taliban? That’s what you should do. It is the dirt you’ve created to fight the Russians. Don’t expect any sympathy from us now. Just clean it with your own blood. Like you Americans say, “you guys had it coming”
You see, it’s not about love of your country or the flag. It’s definitely not about the well being and the freedom of others. It’s about money for an elite minority in US. They sacrificed many young souls in Vietnam. What was it for? And they still have fools like Westward Wind to defend them…Such a pitty…
Answer:
I would state that most people are very welcoming of North Americans; I’ve never heard of anyone being discriminated against for being American (if they were disliked, it was for personal reasons, not their nationality).
I suppose generalized complaints against people from the United Says are that they may be too loud, too opinionated, too bossy, too materialistic, too religious, too parochial and ignorant of events outside their own country, no knowledge of international geography or politics, too politically correct, and an overly naive sense of humor.
However, in real life, the real person is always much more important than a stereotype.
I like most of the people I've met from the US; especially African-Americans and Hispanics. Canadians always seem super-polite but a tiny fake.
Answer:
I'm from another country. There is a generalisation that Americans are self centred and arrogant…and a bit too patriotic and “we are the greatest country in the whole world” as Oprah loves to state. Your reputation is that the world news stops outside of your own borders (if it doesn't directly involve you, then you don't know about it). Very insular..and a lot of Christian/God fanatics.
But hey, that's just the general reputation…personally I've met a lot of Americans and they've all been cool and friendly.
Answer:
I'm an American who invests in world markets. Believe you me, I know what's going on in the rest of the world when my portfolio changes or my taxes go up. My country is the most generous and giving when another country faces a natural disaster. Don't confuse me with a corporate banker. By the way, 'barneymishka' (above) is my ex-wife whom I sold to a Muslim slave trader, lol, just kidding.
Answer:
Greedy a$$es?
The Iraqi war effort alone has cost this country 600 BILLION dollars that’ll in all likelihood NOT be repaid by the Iraqi people. And that's just ONE of the countries that we've rescued in current years. And let's not count the price of blood that our military men and women have paid for with their own lives. Greedy a$$es?
The United Says stands alone as the TOP contributor of foreign aid out of ALL nations in the ENTIRE world.
Our 'Greedy A$$es?' 'We deserve to be made fun of?'
I think that's a bit out of line.
I think it's high time that the rest of the world starts worrying about what WE think of THEM. And any country that disrespects us publicly should be scrutinized and looked at closely before we think about continuing to give foreign aid to them.
