I watched the film The Quiet Man yesterday starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, a horse race took place on a beach in a lovely scenic part of Ireland. I know the the village of Cong became famous because of the film but would love to know where the rest of it was filmed.
Answer:
Hello Mary, the film The Quiet Man, was filmed in many different locations in Ireland, but the horse race you ask about to my certain knowledge was filmed on a beach location in noth-west County Mayo, the village of Cong has become a town still dedicated to the memory of the film, and I comprehend that Ms. O'Hara, still resides close to the town of Cong and is of course in her late years now, and was still amongst us, according to the man in the shop that still sells memorabilia and souvinenirs to the visiting public. its a bit like Athenry in County Galway being a slave with the same memorbilia, as it is mentioned in the song famed by Paddy Reilly ' The Fields of Athenry'
You are right about Ireland having many lovely scenic areas, and If I liver to be a million years old I would never see them all, the fil you mention even had parts of it filmed in Connemara, near Recess, close to one of my favourite stamping grounds, rugged rocky and very often wet, with that Oh so soft Irish rain.. I hope this helps with your query…Good luck now. …..Tony M
