I'm going on a trip to Paris and Italy and I'm leaving April 2nd. I know what spring in Paris is like but how is it in Italy. Can I wear some of these really adorable sundresses that I've been buying, or should I stick to pants? When I went to Greece last year they were in spring but it was March or the end of March and it was windy and rainy most of the time, though still beautiful. I'm going with a group but the leader is a friend of mine, but also a man, so when I ask him what the weather will be like so I can know what to wear he doesn't really know what to tell me. Can someone help me out? The trip is from April 2nd- the 12th.

Answer:
To some extent, the answer to your question depends on where you're visiting in Italy. The BBC page I've linked to below has links to data on average conditions in a number of Italian cities on the right of the page.

However, to take Rome as an example, the weather there in April is – on average – not too bad, with highs of 19°C (66°F), lows of 10°C (50°F), only 6 days with rain during the month and an average of 7 hours of sunshine everyday.

But, as an earlier responder has said, this winter has been particularly wet, cool and generally miserable (well, as miserable as it ever gets in Italy, which is not all THAT miserable compared to someplace like Scotland), so it seem reasonable to assume that you might have a cool and damp visit in April.

I remember that last year the weather where we live in Abruzzo (east central Italy) was nice enough in the second half of April for my partner to spend a few days on our terrace sunbathing, but there were also evenings when it was cool enough for us to turn on the central heating. But the countryside around here in April is always very green, lush-looking and with lots of blossom and wildflowers.

My advice would be to pack one or two sundresses, but to make sure you also have clothes that’ll allow you to do the layering thing if the weather is not that nice. Definitely also pack one of those collapsible umbrellas, just in case.

I hope you enjoy your visit to Italy whatever the weather might turn out to be.

Answer:
You won't be able to wear sundresses in Italy, not in april. The weather around that time of year is gorgeous but still cool. Stick to pants and tops and jackets. Bring along one or two summer dresses, you never know, when the sun comes out around midday you might get the chance to sit somewhere and be really summery. Have a great time.

Most years, early April is pretty nice here, but still cool enough for a light jacket or sweater early in the month. This has been a cold, wet winter this year here in northern Italy so far though. It's usually a good idea to have a small folding umbrella you can carry with you just in case.
