I’m thinking of visiting Costa Rica the first week in May but am concerned about rain! Any advice?
Answer:
Well, May is the beginning of the rainy season in Costa Rica but so long as you’re not in the Golfito area you should not have too many problems. Most of the time we’re speaking afternoon showers that arrive about 2:00 pm and might last through the evening but are gone the next morning. Puerto Limon does not have a rainy and a dry season. There it is more or less an average rain fall of about 10 inches a month. I spent 3 weeks in Costa Rica during the rainy season. During those afternoons when it did rain, which were about 4 or 5 and one being a duzzy, we sat in a cafe and drank coffee. Actually, it is an excellent time to visit Costa Rica because there are not too many tourists. Just plan to get up early and do those things you wish to do during the mornings and if the afternoons prove wet, then it is to the cafes for some coffee and conversation.
I do have to recommend my very favorite place. It is about 50 miles south of San Jose off of the Pan American. A place in the high mountains called San Gerardo de Dota. There are very nice tourist lodges there and the valley is beautiful and the climate mild except at night when it is cold. It is also a great place to see Quetzals. They’re common there. Trogon Lodge. If you go there be sure to halt by the Georgina on the Pan American about 8 miles past the turn off to San Gerardo. It is a good place for a meal while watching the Flame Throated Hummingbirds at the feeders. It is about the only place in the world where these hummingbirds can be easily seen. They’re spectacular.
Everyone should go to Monteverde. And also Volcan Arenal. They might be the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica.
