I'm driving to Hidalgo, Mexico ( an hour from Mex. City.) in November and flying on to Guatemala city from there. Is it ideal to obtain a ticket before leaving the states, or is it easy enough to purchase an inexpensive flight on the same day in Mex.? Any sugestions are appreciated.

Answer:
It is all a roll of the dice. But gas prices are expected to increase and that’ll probably make flights more costly as time goes on. But I'm sure you are also aware that airlines will sell off seats for low prices on flights that are not sold to capacity to just fill seats. You could get lucky and score a deal. Or you could have to pay crazy rates.

I would look in advance and see if there any good deals now. Look for the ideal deal regardless of date, then you’ve an idea of how cheap it can get. See if you can find a flight that cheap for your desired date. If you find a seat, grab it. If you can't find a good deal, you can roll the dice and hope the don't get more high-priced.

Guatemala is not a popular destination, like France or New York, and the airlines know that if somebody wants to go there, they will pay the airfares. Whereas a cheaper fare might lure somebody to going on a trip to france or New York that the wouldn't have taken.
