What’s the thought in Mexico of Spanish explorer Hernan Cortez, the man often given the blame for the fall of the Aztecs- Is Cortez seen a heroic explorer, or a butcher?
I just read Bernal Diaz's 'The Conquest Of New Spain' ( a current reprint of Diaz's accounts from the 1500s), and Diaz , who served with Cortez, painted him in a positive light- Diaz suggested it was the indiginous people- not the Spanish, who were the first to start a fight….
How do most Mexican people look on Cortez? With pride- or with disgust and shame?
Answer:
This might give a clue: Cortez's crypt is at the Hospital de Jesús Nazareno in Mexico City. However, his body has been moved more than eight times to avoid destruction.
