I'm going on vacation soon and booked an excursion to ride “on the beach” and “see ancient ruins” - is it a good excursion? any tips? (I am an experienced rider, but my fiance is not.)

Are you sure it's on the island? My guess is it will be across the channel just south of Playa del Carmen. The ruins on Cozumel are not worth seeing. The ones in Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Ek Balaam, et al. are much better.
