my sister had a spanish exchange student… notice “had”…
right now it should be “has” but she went home early…
she was suppose to stay 3 weeks but barely stayed 2… idk…
on the last night she was here, i heard her crying and speaking to someone in spanish… i thought it was about one of her friends or family,, cas she mentioned one of friends having a hard time… but the next morning, she was able to talk to my mom and my sister… and i think she was depressed or something… i think she was overwelmed.. idk how to explain it… well… we took her apple picking and were planning a brunch for friends to meet her and all of this nice stuff… i think she was worried… or nervous.. idk wat was the matter with her…. wat do u think?

I thnk it´s impossible to determine exacty…3 weeks is such a short time, but depending on the age of the girl, and how much time she may have spent away from her family, it might have been too much.
Most of the time, the group leaders can talk a kid through the homesickness, but families in Spain are often VERY tight, and the people there, well, it soooo depends on the family and their own style, but many people have never even been out of their little towns, so crossing the ocean and living with some other family CAN be very difficult for them.
However, since this was such a short trip, I tend to think your first guess might be right. There might have been some sort of family emergency, and she needed to get home…when did all this happen? What was the time in relation to that plane crash in Madrid? Could she have known someone who died on that? Or it could have been almost anything…Do you’ve an email for her? Try to email her…don't press for answers, just tell her you were sorry she had to go, and you hope everything is okay, and you are worried for her. (you might want to share that with your sister, who was her actual hostess).
I hope everything is okay.

Sometimes this feeling is called also “culture-shock”. It can have diff. reaction from being depressed to being very quiet to feeling sick and missing your own country, family and friends and food.
Maybe she was not ready to do this exchange.
Answer:
She might have been homesick or maybe not liked the country your in(animals, people, smell, landscape - things like that)
Hope this helped.
