Our 10 year anniversary is in July and it has always been my wifes dream to go to Switzerland. We want to go to Zurich and I have heard that the village from the movie “Heidi” is near by, just wondering if anyone has been there and if it is worth visiting. As this is my wifes favorite movie this would be great to go to. Also I want to go to Germany while there. We would want to go by train as I believe this would be a great way to see the country side as well as the most economical. If anyone can help let me know !!
Answer:
Switzerland and southern Germany are both very beautiful. We've been several times.
I'm not well versed on the “Heidi” movie — in fact, I've never met a Swiss named Heidi! LOL But, I'm sure that would be great.
Something to take into account when visiting Switzerland, it has three very distinctive areas — French, German and Italian. The Italian is a bit more difficult to get to — you go over the alps — but it's great!
I do advocate train travel. There are several “special” trains you can take. On the site I'm posting, you can take the any of them, but I have the ability to personally advocate the Golden Pass line and then the Glacier Express.

I would recommend ending the Swiss part of your trip in Zurich. There’s plenty to see and do and you're sitting right on top of the hauptbahnof. From there, take the DB (Deutsch Bahn) ICE train up to Stuttgart. It's a nice trip and just a couple of hours. It's MUCH less stressful than flying.

Stuttgart is a beautiful, but often overlooked city — home to Mercedes. The new Mercedes museum is great and the city is also an simple commute to Rothenburg — a Bavarian city every one should see on their first trip. While in the Stuttgart area, Ludwigsburg is also great (home to the “mini” Versailles palace) and a day trip to Schwabish Hall would be good too. There are a couple of hotels right by the hauptbahnhof which would be very convenient. You can also fly out of the international airport there.
Answer:
Heidi's village is called Maienfeld.

The restaurant in the castle of Maienfeld is very good. The vines of the area (the area is called Bündner Herrschaft, the vines are Maienfelder, Jeninser and Malanser) are among the ideal in Switzerland.
By train, it takes a tiny bit more than an hour to travel from Zurich to Maienfeld. Voyaging by train is the cheapest and ideal way to travel in Switzerland.
Answer:
I went there last summer.
And it was ABSOULUTLY beautiful.
I got the privlige to ride into Switzerland on a train from Italy, (which I strongly recommend, train travel is much more comfortable than vehicle or boat or plane) and I got to see the beautiful mountains.
My god, it was breathtaking.
*Sighs* I wish I could go back.
Yes country side is where to go. I stayed in Lucern, which the city is amazingly simple to navigate through. I'm only 15, and my gaurdian let me and my friends roam around the city by ourselves. Its simply impossible to get lost in that city. Also that city has a beautiful river.
Ahh. I want to go back so bad!

I'm not sure where the village is they may have filmed Heidi in, but going to Zurich for your anniversary is wonderful! It's my favorite city outside the U.S. and there is plenty to see. You and your wife could take a walk through the old part of Zurich which is along the Limmat River, and is absolutely gorgeous. The Grossmunster cathedral is along the Limmat also, and you should go inside if it's open. The windows are stained glass by Marc Chagall.
You can take a boat tour of Lake Zurich (Zurichsee) and see all the different surrounding towns. It's very pretty and resting. If you’ve a chance to get off the boat in Kusnacht I would highly recommend it. The town is about 15 minutes by train from Zurich, and there is a hotel along the lake called Sonne (it means sun in German) You can eat lunch outside along the lake, and it's one of my favorite places. I hope you enjoy all that Zurich has to offer!!
Visiting Germany by train from Zurich is very economical because it's not too far, and it's probably the ideal way to see the countryside because you'll have unobstructed views from the big train windows.
