I'm trying to decide whether to get the movers (removalists) to pack all my stuff, some of my stuff or only the stuff which isn't valuable. The thing I'm worried about is that they'll dent a canvas painting, or drop something fragile, or put two items together in a box that’ll scratch each other… the employer is paying for the move, so it's not the cost that bothers me but whether or not I should let the men handle my more important possessions.
Has anybody here had a problem with things being damaged during moving home?
Answer:
Check out their record on damages.
Reputable movers will do a superior job of packing and shipping your valuables than you’ll. They know what is needed.
I’ve this memory of watching them prepare a large-framed picture for shipping, thinking it was complete overkill: glass protection, then bubble wrap, then cardboard, then more bubble wrap, then yards of tape. However, it arrived without incident.
Answer:
Anything that you're concerned about you might want to go ahead and pack yourself. Anything that either can't be damaged or that damage wouldn't matter, leave for the movers to deal with. Most companies can provide all the supplies you'll need at little to no additional cost. Once you're satisfied that these things are packed up safely the movers will take care of loading and unloading them from the truck.
