In order to get a passport, would I be able to use a color copy of my Birth certificate for proof of citizenship? I'd rather not hand out my actual one.
Answer:
You must use your original or a certified copy to get your passport…not just a copy machine copy. you can send for an additional certified copy…good idea to have two , anyway. Also, having your passport mailed to Mexico isn’t a good idea. If someone is going to send it to you there, you need to have them send it by Fed-ex or DHL to be sure you actually get it. If you stick to your plan to go to Mexico next week, you’ll need to get another certified copy from your home say. If you don’t know the exact place to get one, go to the site below and click on your state and it will give you the info. Unless you’re planning to stay in Mexico until after June of 2009, you really don’t need your passport right away. And since you can only stay in Mexico 6 months max on a tourist card, maybe you could just wait til you return to send for your passport.

I just went through this and had to go to the city in which I was born in to get another original. Duplicates are not accepted.
